At the 2013 TUC Disabled Workers’ Conference, Prospect’s motion drew attention to the importance of monitoring the UK’s compliance with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, particularly highlighting the impact on disabled people of this Government’s cuts and austerity measures.
The Equality and Human Rights Commission has recently published a report on progress towards putting the rights enshrined within the Convention into practice within the UK. The EHRC is the formal “independent mechanism” that has a role in overseeing the Convention. The report reflects the issues that the TUC has been raising and recommends no less than 66 questions that the UN should pose to the governments of the UK and the devolved governments.
