Update number 475 • 27 March 2020
The level of compensation for injury to feelings in Equality Act claims has been increased.
The Presidents of the Employment Tribunals (England, Wales & Scotland) have updated the Vento compensation bands for injury to feelings.
The new rates apply to claims presented on or after 6 April 2020 and will be:
Lower band |
£900 - £9,000 |
Where the discrimination has been less serious than the middle band, or an isolated occurrence. Many cases fall into this category. |
Middle band |
£9,000 – £27,000 |
Where there has been repeated or continuing discrimination of a more serious kind. |
Upper band |
£27,000 - £45,000 |
Cases where there has been extremely serious discrimination, usually consisting of prolonged and consistent harassment. Very few cases fall into this band. Compensation in excess of £45,000 may be awarded in very exceptional cases. |
We will be updating the Employment Law Briefing on Compensation & Remedies shortly.
